  • Tigers crush Crusaders 11-0 in opening round of States

    [March 8, 2012]

Tigers Roll over Trinity Catholic 11-0

In one of the most lopsided games of the 2011-12 season the Tigers (21-2) beat the Crusaders 11-0 in front of a packed house at Winter Garden.  The seven Senior Tigers bid farewell to their home rink as they played their last game of their high school careers at the Garden.  The Tigers return to action against West Haven at a yet-to-be determined neutral site on Saturday, March 10.

The Tigers wasted no time in putting up their first goal, as Vin Rella banked one in from behind the goal just 1:22 into the game.  With just over 2 minutes left in the 1st period, Sean Wilkinson lit the lamp short-handed to put the Tigers up 2-0 to end the period.

The goals came in bunches in the second and into early in the third peiod for the Tigers as even a goalie change by the Crusaders could not stop the Tiger goal barrage.  Sophmore forward Jack Tregurtha led the way with his first career Tiger hat trick, while Freshman wing Liam Smith notched his first playoff goal of his young promising career.  In one of the prettiest short-handed goals of the year, Danny McMullan and Sean Wilkinson played tic-tac-goal when McMullan buried his first of two on the night.  Goals were also scored by Cam McGuire, Jack Christensen, and Johnny Richards as the Tigers rolled into the quarter finals of the CIAC State Tournament against 6th seeded West Haven winners Wednesday versus East Haven 5-3.

Nate Gliedman kept the Crusaders frustrated as he turned their shots away with ease.  The defense was again anchored by solid blue line play by Brendan Bossidy, Henry Gough, Andy DeLalla, Geoff Schneider, Tyler Trombetta, James Kelly and McMullan.

    Ridgefield 3 Darien 2 — Final

The Tigers beat the Darien Blue Wave 3-2 to win the 2012 FCIAC Championship.  It was a great team win, with everyone contributing to this win, not only Saturday night but throughout the season.

The goals were scored by Chris Morrow, Jack Christensen, and Sean Wilkinson. Nate Gliedman stood tall between the pipes for the Tigers, but in the end it was a total team and coaching effort that brought home the 2012 FCIAC Championship.

The Tigers win their fourth overall FCIAC title and second in 5 years (last won in 2007).

Congratulations to all the Tigers and the coaches.

  • Tigers Advance to FCIAC Finals – Highlights of St Joes FCIAC Semi-final

    [March 2, 2012]

    Tigers Advance to FCIAC Final

The Tigers advanced to their second FCIAC final in 3 years by routing the St. Joseph Cadets 6-0 in the FCIAC semi-final Wednesday night.  As they say “pay back is a ….” as the Tigers turned the tables from last year when the Cadets beat the Tigers in the semi-finals.

Both teams sparred with each other for the first few minutes of the game, and Senior goalie Nate Gliedman came up with some key saves early for the Tigers, before Junior Chris Morrow opened the scoring with assists from Sean Wilkinson and  Danny McMullan.  The first goal was followed less than two minutes later with Senior Terry Guider burying a pass from Jack Christensen as the Tigers took a 2-0 lead to the locker room after the first period.

The Tigers ambushed the Cadets in the 2nd period with 4 goals from Christensen, Vin Rella, Morrow (his second of the night), and Wilkinson.  The Tigers played well, with crisp passing and good defense and were led at the blue line by McMullan, Brendan Bossidy, Ian Ball, Henry Gough, Jamie Kelly, and Andy DeLalla.

  • Tigers look good in season finale – Defeat Glastonbury 6-1

    [February 21, 2012]

    Tigers Chop Glastonbury 6-1

The Tigers (18-2) ended one of the most successful regular seasons in recent memory Tuesday afternoon defeating the Glastonbury Tomahawks (14-4) 6-1 at Trinity College.

It was a total team effort that led to the second Tiger victory over the Tomahawks this season, with Danny McMullan (13) Timmy Kelly (18), and Sean Wilkinson (25) all chipping in two goals each, as the inspired Tigers dismantled a very good Tomahawk team.  Glastonbury, winners of 8 of their last 9, ranked high in state point rankings, were outshot by the Tigers 41-19, as Tiger goaltender Nate Gliedman stood tall between the pipes.

    T. Kelly and McMullan started the scoring with two power-play goals 3 minutes apart in the first period, both the recipients of some nifty passing by Wilkie.  Kelly sliced the heart of the Tomahawks, with his second goal with just 1/10 of a second left in the period after a barrage of shots in front of the Tomahawk goalie.

The Tigers took a 5-0 lead to the locker room after the second period.  Glastonbury came out spirited in the third period, scoring their lone goal just 22 seconds into the 3rd, but the Tigers took the momentum back killing off a 5-3 when the Tiger second penalty came after only 15 seconds had elapsed on the first penalty.  Wilkie ended the scoring with a power play goal with just 2:48 remaining in the game.

The victory all but secured a 3rd seed in the Division 1 State Playoffs for the Tigers the first full week in March, but first the Tigers have the FCIAC conference playoffs at Terry Connors rink, with their first game next Wednesday, 2/29.

  • Tigers end conference schedule with win at Norwalk

    [February 20, 2012]

The Tigers ended a very successful FCIAC conference schedule with an 11-1 record after beating Norwalk-McMahon 9-1 Monday afternoon.

It was a total team effort that led to the Tigers win, highlighted by two Tigers scoring their first goals of the season.  Sophomore Christian O’Connell darted one in by the Norwalk goal-minder, only to be folowed by Junior Geoff Schneider adding his first tally of the 2011-12 campaign.

The Tigers travel to play a very hot Glastonbury Tomahawk team who the Tigers beat 5-2 in mid-December on Tuesday afternoon.  The Tigers receive a first round bye in the FCIAC conference tournament, and their opponent will be determined by first round contests played Saturday, 2/24.  The Tigers will “leap” into action in the FCIAC second round Wednesday, 2/29, at Terry Connors Ice Arena in Stamford.

  • Ridgefield Destroys Wilton, Retains Winter Garden Cup – Highlights

    [February 10, 2012]

Wearing black in their home rink did not make any difference to the Tigers, as they handedly defeated the upstart Wilton Warriors 7-0this afternoon in front of a packed Winter Garden Arena

The Tigers went up early, striking first on Sean Wilkinson’s beautiful toe drag to the middle, beating the Wilton goaltender on the blocker side. Shortly thereafter, Jack Tregurtha would tally a power play goal, absorbing Wilkie’s shot, and turning around to finish on his backhand. To cap off a dominating first period, Jack Christensen tallied a power play goal with Danny McMullan picking up the assist

The 2nd period was highy eventful, as both teams showed their displeasure for each other in one form or another. Wilkinson would add his second of the game, with another assist from McMullan. After the Tigers went down 2 men and were forced to kill off a 5 on 3 and a major penalty, the Wilkie show was capped off with a dazzling effort from the penalty kill trio of Timmy Kelly, McMullan and Wilkinson, with it being capped with Wilkie’s snipe from just above the slot to make the score 5-0. Wilkinson would continue, adding his 4th on a nifty backhander from a clever deke after another strong kill from Kelly and McMullan.

The scoring was capped off by Senior forward Terry Guider, netting the final Ridgefield tally. It was a good night on the scoresheet for the Tigers, with Johnny Richards tallying two assists, McMullan with 3 of his own, and Timmy Kelly with 3 assists as well. The Tigers were anchored by their lockdown defense led by Senior Captain Brendan Bossidy, Sophomore Jamie Kelly, Junior Ian Ball, Sophomore Henry Gough, and Sophomore Tyler Trombetta. An integral part to the victory was Nate Gliedman’s shutout performance, turning away every Wilton chance incuding an impressive glove save on star Wilton forward Matt Kobyra.

  • Ridgefield (13-1) declaws South Windsor Bobcats (8-5) – Highlights

    [February 5, 2012]

The Tigers traveled to an unfriendly rink and beat the South Windsor Bobcats 3-1to notch their 13th win in a row on Saturday evening.

The Bobcats went up 1-0 in the 1st period, before Junior Chris Morrow scored his first two goals of the season to put the Tigers up 2-1 to end the 1st. Morrow’s first goal came on the Tigers’ first power play of the night, when Brendan Bossidy hit Morrow right in front of the Bobcat goal and Morrow buried it. With 3:44 remaining in the 1st, Morrow rammed home his second of the period at even strength with a nifty pass from Senior Sean Wilikinson.

The teams played a scoreless 2nd period, and the third period started the same way with the very questionable officiating leading to aggressive play all over the ice. The Tigers played spirited team hockey and hung tough until Cam McGuire pin-balled his 4th of the year from the left side past the Bobcat goalie after a key offensive zone face-off win. That was how it ended 3-1, as the Tigers sent South Windsor to their 3rd straight loss and 5th loss of the year.
